This Privacy Policy explains how Recitly ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our mobile application Smart AI Flashcard Maker (the "App") and related services at recitlycards.com (the "Services").

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information you provide

Account information: name, email address, password (stored hashed).
Content: flashcards, decks, folders, study sessions, photos and text you submit for AI generation.
Support communications: messages you send to us at support@recitlycards.com.

1.2 Information collected automatically

Usage data: screens viewed, features used, study session metrics (cards reviewed, accuracy, streak count).
Device data: device type, operating system, app version, language.
Crash reports and diagnostics for stability and performance.

1.3 Information we do not collect

We do not collect precise location, contacts, biometric data, health data, or browsing history outside our App.

2. AI Processing (Important)

Recitly uses third-party AI providers to generate flashcards, distractors and explanations. When you use AI-powered features:

Your inputs (topics, pasted text, photos of notes, card content) are transmitted to Anthropic, PBC ("Claude" API) for processing.
Anthropic processes data under their Privacy Policy and Commercial Terms. Inputs sent through their commercial API are not used to train Anthropic's models.
Recitly does not retain your raw AI prompts beyond the time needed to deliver the result.
Before your first AI feature use, the App requests explicit consent for AI processing.

You can use Recitly without AI features (manual card creation, study, test) — AI is optional.

3. How We Use Information

Provide, operate and maintain the Services.
Generate flashcards, distractors and explanations on your request.
Sync your decks across your devices.
Track study progress (streaks, stats, spaced-repetition scheduling).
Send you study reminders if you opt in to push notifications.
Detect, prevent and address fraud, abuse and security issues.
Comply with legal obligations.

4. Sharing of Information

We share information only with:

Anthropic, PBC — for AI generation features (Claude API).
Apple Inc. / Google LLC — for in-app purchases, subscription management and app distribution (when applicable).
Cloud infrastructure providers hosting our backend (limited to data necessary to operate the Services).
Law enforcement when required by valid legal process.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for advertising. We do not share data with advertising networks.

5. Data Retention

Account data is retained while your account is active.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account, or at recitlycards.com/delete-account. Deletion permanently removes your decks, cards, study sessions, profile and all associated data within 30 days.
Aggregated, non-identifiable analytics may be retained for product improvement.

6. Children's Privacy

Recitly is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at support@recitlycards.com and we will delete it.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction (GDPR, CCPA, UK GDPR, etc.) you may have rights to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Correct inaccurate data.
Delete your data ("right to be forgotten").
Export your data in a portable format.
Object to or restrict processing.
Withdraw consent for AI processing at any time.

8. Security

We protect your data with industry-standard measures: TLS 1.2+ in transit, hashed passwords (bcrypt), JWT tokens stored in device secure storage (Keychain on iOS, EncryptedSharedPreferences on Android), and access controls on our backend. No method is 100% secure, but we work continuously to protect your information.

9. International Data Transfers

Your data may be processed in the European Union and the United States. By using the Services, you consent to such transfers. We rely on Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App or by email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
